I've tried to include as much information on the services offered and what to expect, but I completely understand that embarking upon any kind of journey such as that with hypnotherapy can be a very daunting process. Below you'll find answers to the questions I'm asked most by my clients, don't see the question you have? Initial Consultation

This is an opportunity for you to meet me and decide if I am the right therapist for you!
Within the session, after taking some information from you about what you would like to change I will explain to you how our brains work, why they can make us feel/think/behave the way that we do and, perhaps most importantly, what we can do about it.
I will explain how Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy can help you move forward and make the changes you want to make.

You will also receive a complementary hypnotherapy audio to listen to and advice on what you can be doing at home to start making positive change.

This is a no obligation session. You will not be asked to make a decision there and then, however clients usually come away from the Initial Consultation feeling positive and motivated to start the therapeutic process as soon as possible!

Weekly sessions where we focus on your preferred future and the small steps we can take towards achieving your ultimate goal. Once you have identified what you want to achieve we finish the session with 30 minutes of guided visualisation and relaxation through hypnosis. You therefore leave every session feeling relaxed and positive about the changes you want to make.

All sessions payable in advance of the session via bank transfer.
Single Session: Smoking Cessation

This is a single session and by the end of the 2 hours you will be a non-smoker.
Which and New Scientist Magazine both identify hypnosis as the most effective approach to stopping smoking, without cravings, irritability or weight gain.
Solution Focussed Hypnotherapy has an 80% success rate after 6 months, compared to Nicotine Replacement Therapy, which has a 10% success rate and the NHS which has a 20% success rate.
No Initial Consultation required and you will receive a complementary hypnotherapy audio to listen to at home to support the process.
Three Sessions: Phobia Treatment
3x 60 minutes
Following the Initial Consultation, it takes just three sessions to rid you of your phobic response, completely! You will receive a complementary hypnotherapy audio to support the process.

What is clinical hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis (or trance); a state of focused attention and increased suggestibility during which positive suggestion, metaphor and visualisation can be used to facilitate positive change.
Clinical hypnotherapy uses advanced methods of hypnosis and other psychological techniques to treat a variety of medical and psychological problems. Clinical hypnotherapy is an established complementary therapy with an excellent track record – 85% of people will readily respond to clinical hypnotherapy.

What will happen when I contact you?

You will be invited to an Initial Consultation where I will ask you what you want to be different and how you want your life to be. I will then explain the neurology behind why you are thinking, feeling and behaving the way that you are and how solution focused hypnotherapy can help you achieve your goals. Following the Initial Consultation, I will send you a relaxation audio to listen to each night when you go to bed. The audio not only helps calm your mind so you can drift off into a restful sleep, it also supports the therapeutic process by reinforcing the work we will be doing within your sessions. There is however, no obligation to book in a session following the initial consultation and the relaxation audio is complementary.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis (or trance) is a deeply relaxed state. It is a very ordinary process that we do many times a day without even realising it! Have you ever driven a car, got to your destination and have no recollection of part of your journey? Or “zoned out” whilst watching TV or listening to the radio, so you have no idea what you’ve been listening to for the past 10 minutes? That is hypnosis and it is a crucial process that the brain needs to undertake in order for us to remain calm and in control of our thoughts and feelings.
The only difference between the form of hypnosis you experience on a daily basis and the hypnosis you experience within hypnotherapy is the depth of relaxation and the use of positive visualisation, stories and metaphors which allow the subconscious brain to process the positive changes that you want to make. You will be asked to make yourself comfortable and either close your eyes or focus your vision on one object in the room and allow your eyes to relax. You remain conscious and aware throughout and in complete control.

Will I lose control?

No you won't. Hypnosis is a 100% consent state and you're always in control. Nobody can be hypnotised against their will. Nobody can be forced to do anything against their will while in hypnosis. The 'loss-of-control' misconception originates from the world of entertainment and stage hypnosis. Stage hypnosis makes use of volunteers that are happy to play the fool for the audience and stage hypnosis should never be confused with clinical hypnosis. Registered Clinical Hypnotherapists adhere to a strict code of conduct.

Will I be asleep when hypnotised?

You will not be asleep when hypnotised. Hypnosis is generally a very relaxed state but it is not sleep. Many people after a session of hypnosis don't believe that they were hypnotised at all but that comes from misconceptions about just what a 'trance' in fact is.

Do I need to believe in it for it to work?

In a word, yes. In order for the therapeutic process to be effective you must have intent. By that I mean that you must understand how this process will benefit you and be motivated to give it your all. If you do not have that intent your subconscious mind will put a barrier up to the positive changes you want to make, which makes the process much more difficult. Solution focused hypnotherapy is based on current neuroscientific understanding of how our brains process and respond to information. It is an evidence-based approach, so we are able to use a statistical database to record your progress, which provides a visual representation (in the form of a chart) of the improvements you are making.

What should I expect from my session?

Each session lasts one hour and in the majority of cases has the same format (a different format is used for phobias and smoking cessation).

• What’s Been Good? – Firstly, we will reflect on what’s been good about your week and discuss the neuroscience behind our thought patterns and behaviours.
• Goal setting - Then we work together to identify a small, achievable goal which will help you move forward.
• Hypnosis – for the last 30 minutes of the session hypnotherapy is used to facilitate change through positive visualisation, metaphors and suggestion.

You finish the session feeling calm, relaxed and positive about the changes you are making in your life.

Smoking Cessation – a smoking cessation session is split into three parts:
• Finding out about your habit – when you started smoking, times of the day where you are more likely to smoke, family history of smoking etc.
• Explanation of the neuroscience behind smoking – how smoking effects the neurochemistry in our brain which ultimately effects our mood and behaviour.
• Hypnosis – 30 minutes of trance to inform the subconscious mind you are no longer a smoker.
At the end of the session you will be asked to hand over all your smoking paraphernalia and it will be destroyed. You will no longer be a smoker.


Phobias – the format of the phobia sessions is based on Neuro-linguistic Programming techniques that have been adapted to incorporate hypnosis. You will be asked to visualise two occasions where you have experienced your phobic response – one of which should be your earliest memory - and within trance we will replay those events over and over in your mind until there is no longer an emotional response – you effectively get bored of them. In the following session we use positive visualisation to replace the phobic reaction with a new, calm and controlled response.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions you will require depends very much on your complaint or goal and on your individual circumstances. On average, I work with people who are suffering with anxiety, depression or related conditions for 8-12 sessions, but for some it has been as few as 4 sessions whilst for others they have needed a lot more. Smoking cessation is 1 session and Phobias takes 3 sessions.

Will you be setting me “homework” to complete between sessions?

Between sessions you will be asked to listen to a relaxation audio every night when you go to sleep, to help calm your mind ready for a restful sleep but also to reinforce the work we will be doing in your sessions. You will also be asked to record in a diary at the end of the day 3 - 5 things that have been good. Again, this is to help calm your mind, getting it ready for a restful sleep and to reinforce the work we will be doing together in your sessions. There may be other small tasks I ask you to complete between sessions, but these will be entirely dependent on your individual circumstance.
